OKX App for Beginners: What Every Tab and Button Actually Does
The OKX app packs spot, futures, Earn, bots and a Web3 wallet into one interface. This orientation guide explains what each tab does, what beginners can ignore, and which settings to change on day one.
Open the OKX app for the first time and you'll see price charts, candlesticks, a dozen product names and a bottom bar full of icons. None of it is complicated once you know what each part is for — but nobody explains that. This is the orientation tour.
The bottom navigation, decoded
- Home — watchlists, announcements and shortcuts. Customisable; most useful once you have favourite pairs.
- Markets — every trading pair with price and 24h change. Tapping a pair opens the chart, not a trade — you can look without buying.
- Trade — the actual order screen for spot and derivatives. This is where real money moves.
- Discover / Grow — Earn products, copy trading, bots and campaigns live here. Powerful, but every product in this tab deserves its own research before you touch it.
- Assets — your balances, deposit and withdrawal buttons, and order history.
The two modes: simple vs pro
OKX ships a simplified interface for buying and holding, and a full pro interface for order books and derivatives. Beginners should stay in the simple mode until they can answer: what is a limit order, what is slippage, and what fee am I paying? Switching modes is reversible in settings — nothing is lost by starting simple.
The accounts inside your account
A common source of confusion: your money can sit in different internal accounts.
- Funding account — where deposits land and withdrawals leave from. Think of it as the lobby.
- Trading account — where balances must be before you can place orders.
If the app says you have "insufficient balance" while your money is clearly visible, it is almost always sitting in the other internal account. Use the Transfer function (free, instant, internal) to move it.
What beginners can safely ignore
- Futures, margin, options — leveraged products. Learn spot first; see our futures basics guide before ever enabling these.
- Trading bots — automation is not a shortcut to profit. Read how grid bots work first.
- Launchpad/new-token campaigns — new tokens are the most volatile corner of the market.
Ignoring these for your first month costs you nothing.
Day-one settings worth changing
- Currency display — set your local fiat so portfolio values make sense.
- Anti-phishing code — in security settings; makes fake emails identifiable.
- Price alerts instead of screen-staring — set alerts on pairs you care about; checking charts hourly is how beginners end up overtrading.
- News/notification pruning — turn off promotional pushes; keep security alerts on.
A note on the Web3 wallet tab
The app also contains a separate Web3 wallet — a self-custody wallet where you hold the keys, distinct from your exchange balance. It's a different tool with different risks. We compare the two in exchange account vs Web3 wallet.
FAQ
Can I use the app without depositing? Yes — browsing markets, setting alerts and demo trading all work without funds.
Why do I see different products than a friend in another country? Feature availability is jurisdiction-dependent; the app shows what is licensed for your verified region.
Is the mobile app enough, or do I need the website? For most spot users the app is complete. Advanced charting and some settings are easier on desktop.

A five-minute settings checklist
Before you place any order, spend five minutes in the app's settings. These defaults matter more than most tutorials admit:
| Setting | Where | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Two-factor authentication | Security | Passwords alone are not enough for a financial account |
| Anti-phishing code | Security | Marks genuine OKX emails so fakes stand out |
| Withdrawal address book / whitelist | Security | Limits where funds can be sent even if your login leaks |
| Price display currency | Preferences | Avoids mental conversion mistakes when you think in your home currency |
| Notification rules | Notifications | Price alerts are useful; promotional pings are a distraction |
None of these make trading profitable — they make mistakes less expensive, which for a beginner is worth more.
